Sassuolo boss Fabio Grosso has admitted to feeling a bit powerless as AC Milan racked up goal after goal against his side in the Coppa Italia.

Milan booked their place in the quarter-finals of the cup in very convincing fashion, putting Sassuolo to the sword in a 6-1 win. The game was pretty much put to bed inside 11 first-half minutes as Samuel Chukwueze (2), Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leao all scored.

Davide Calabria and Tammy Abraham added further gloss to the scoreline in the second half, though Sassuolo did get a consolation before Abraham’s goal through Mulattieri.

The Neroverdi are well on course to secure promotion back to Serie A at the first attempt after going down last season, but this was perhaps a bit of an awakening regarding the work still to do.

Grosso spoke to the journalists who gathered in the press conference room at San Siro after the full-time whistle and he analysed a difficult night for his side. MilanNews relayed his comments.

How do you make the most of a night like this?

“I’m not angry but we are disappointed because we could and would have done better. We found a team that came in present and with the desire to qualify.

“It was an experience for many guys who deserved to play in this match and that I would put back on the pitch. They will take a big disappointment in their suitcase but they are useful to prepare you.”

You left Berardi on the bench…

“If the game had gone differently, perhaps he would have played a bit. Domenico is coming off a very long injury and overlapping minutes is not ideal. We have a very clear objective and we are refocusing. This was a wild card in the deck that we definitely wanted to deal with better.”

What did you like?

“There are some ideas in the game: we were not very good at keeping our distance and taking away space from the great opponents we had in front of us. I keep what we did in negative and positive, they are all experiences that are useful to raise the level.”

How much of an impact did the league have?

“Not much. Today there were many guys who wanted to play a different game: for many reasons, especially due to the merits of our opponents, we didn’t succeed.

“I think it’s a fair experience to give to the guys who won in Lecce and deserved to get to the last 16. Today was a different game but sometimes difficulties are useful and help you.”

You chose to bench Moldovan…

“He is one of the players who is doing very well in the league, it seemed right to give Satalino the opportunity to play this match. I wanted to give the opportunity to the guys who deserved this stage.”
