Zamalek Approves Retirement of Club Icon Shikabala
Zamalek's officially approved the retirement of captain Mahmoud Abdel Razek Shikabala, although the player himself hasn't yet issued formal announcement.
Despite widespread speculation over whether he would play one more season, the Zamalek board's unanimously agreed to support the 39 year old’s decision to hang up his boots.
The club’s sporting director, John Edward has been tasked with organizing high profile testimonial match, possibly against major european club, to honor Shikabala’s illustrious career one that's spanned more than 2 decades.
The board has also discussed offering Shikabala new role within the club either in technical capacity or in management , as recognition for his enduring legacy.
In the 2023 - 24 season, the veteran made 17 appearances scoring one goal and providing 2 assist with limited impact on the field. Still his symbolic importance to Zamalek & Egyptian football remains unmatched.
Shikabala’s retirement will mark the end of an era at the Cairo club one filled with flair, loyalty and iconic moments that defined generation.
