Arteta backs Gyokeres after underwhelming Arsenal debut | OneFootball

Mikel Arteta has insisted that Viktor Gyokeres will improve at Arsenal after an isolated debut at Manchester United.

Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win at Manchester United, though Gyokeres struggled to make an impact.

The 27-year-old joined from Sporting Lisbon in a £55m deal earlier this summer, having netted 97 goals in 102 games in Portuguese football over the last two seasons.

Excitement has understandably greeted his arrival in North London, as Arsenal look for a reliable goal presence to fire their title challenge.

However, the Swedish striker was starved of service for his hour on the pitch and managed just 21 touches, only three of which came inside the penalty box.

Despite those numbers, Arteta said he was happy with the contribution of Gyokeres and fellow signing Martin Zubimendi.

“Very happy with them, the ones that came in as well, they had a massive impact in the game,” Arteta said to Sky Sports.

“Some are still not at the highest level that they need to get to but we will get there.”
