Burton Albion full-back Zac Ashworth has taken to Twitter to wish his parent club West Bromwich Albion well for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign, posting this message after his move to the Pirelli Stadium was confirmed.

The 20-year-old’s playing time at The Hawthorns always looked as though it was going to be limited despite breaking into the first team, with Conor Townsend and Erik Pieters able to play there as well as Taylor Garnder-Hickman who could potentially operate on the left-hand side if required.

With this, Carlos Corberan has taken the decision to send him to Dino Maamria’s side so the young defender can gain more experience, with Quevin Castro also making a temporary move there in the summer before his loan spell was cut short.

REAL FAKE

Whilst Ashworth looks set to be fighting relegation from League One from now until the end of the season, Albion are on course to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season following Corberan’s exceptional start to life at The Hawthorns.

Currently sitting in sixth place, they could climb even higher if they can continue their remarkable run of form under the ex-Huddersfield Town boss.

And Ashworth has wished them well in their quest to get back to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

He posted: “Delighted to have joined @burtonalbionfc [Burton Albion], really looking forward to the challenge ahead. Also best of luck to everyone involved @WBA [at West Brom] for the rest of the season.”

The Verdict:

This looks to be a good move for Ashworth who will be looking to make an impression out on loan and force his way into Corberan’s first-team plans for next term.

He will be under a considerable amount of pressure at the Pirelli Stadium considering his current loan side’s fight against relegation, so Albion will be keen to see how he copes with that pressure.

If the Baggies are promoted at the end of the season, Ashworth’s game time could be limited further next season so this loan should enable him to put himself in the shop window for next season ahead of another potential loan exit.

In terms of Albion, they probably don’t need any luck considering how they are performing at the moment! They could have easily slipped up against Chesterfield last night – but a professional display saw them through to the next round of the FA Cup.

Injuries could potentially determine how successful they are for the remainder of the season – but they have a decent amount of quality in their squad at this stage and it would be difficult to see them not securing a top-six place under their current management.
