Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 4 games

Article image:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 4 games

The Baggies produced an excellent away performance at the bet365 Stadium to take all three points against a side that were defending a 100% record. It leaves Ryan Mason’s team in second place behind Rob Edwards’ Middlesbrough side that have won all four of their Championship games so far this season.

Nat Phillips scored the winning goal, his first for the club, and the first by an Albion centre-back since Torbjørn Heggem scored in the 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield United in December last year.

No Albion side has had more than ten points after the first four games of a second tier season, albeit the promotion-winning teams of 1947 and 1930 both had a maximum eight points from their first four matches of the campaign. Ossie Ardiles’ team had a maximum twelve points from the first four matches of the 1992/93 third tier campaign, while the Baggies have won the first four games of a top flight season on two occasions, in 1932/33 and 1953/54.

Furthermore, it is only the eleventh time in the club’s history that they have won the first two away games of a league campaign, and first time that it has been done it in successive seasons.
