WSL: Brighton come from behind to snatch win over Leicester City | OneFootball

Brighton came from behind to beat Leicester City in a scrappy Women’s Super League contest at the King Power Stadium. The result takes the Seagulls above the Foxes into eighth place.

Leicester City are still navigating fixtures without manager Willie Kirk due to an ‘internal investigation’.

The first half

The Foxes started without some of their usual first team players, with Janina Leitzig, Courtney Nevin, and Shannon O’Brien not in the match day squad. However, for the first 10 minutes, they were on top and had a few good chances through the usual threats of Jutta Rantala and Deanne Rose. But the final touch evaded them.

Brighton had glimpses and potentially could have punished a Sophie Howard slip, but great covering in defence from Josie Green and Janice Cayman meant Lize Kop could comfortably make the save. Two further spurned Brighton chances from Veatriki Sarri could have made the score line different at the break, but the teams went in 0-0.

The second half

In the 54th minute, a great pass from Yuka Momiki found Rantala and the Finnish international put the hosts in front — beating Sophie Baggaley from a tight angle. Five minutes later, Brighton found themselves back in the match when substitute Madison Haley equalised. Although replays suggesting a foul on Foxes goalkeeper Kop went unpunished by the referee. Then, the King Power fell silent as Katie Robinson added Brighton’s second, and it was game on.

A frantic number of substitutions for the Foxes didn’t help the fluidity in midfield. But two of those combined to find the back of the net — Lena Petermann levelling from a Saori Takarada through ball. However, after sacrificing defensive players to find a goal, Leicester were undone almost straight away. Elisabeth Terland came back to haunt them as she did in the reverse fixture, but this time it was with the winner. A first-time volley gave Kop no chance in the Leicester goal, and Brighton held on and took all three points back to the coast.
