Former Wrexham striker Lee Trundle has backed the club’s star forward Paul Mullin to score goals in the Championship.

The Red Dragons’ talisman notched his 95th goal for the Racecourse side last Saturday after bagging a hat-trick against Accrington Stanley.

The 29-year-old already has 16 goals to his name this term, despite suffering five broken ribs and a punctured lung during Wrexham’s US pre-season tour and not making a start until September.

Trundle believes Mullin has the right attributes to score at a higher level and is also worthy of a call-up to the Wales squad.

Eligible for the national side through his Welsh grandmother, he was previously placed on the standby list by manager Rob Page for their matches against Gibraltar and Croatia in October.

While Mullin was ultimately not called upon, Trundle says it’s only a matter of time before he dons the red shirt of Wales.

The ex-Swansea man also hit out at people who questioned the striker’s decision to drop two leagues to join Wrexham in July 2021.

Trundle says Mullin could definitely play in the Championship

Speaking to the Fearless in Devotion podcast, Trundle said: “I love Mulls and I think he's a great player. What gets me a little bit is people try and question your ability by saying ‘Oh, well you're only playing at that level’.

“If Mulls went up and played in the Championship in the right team, I think he would still score goals.

“The thing now is about this Wales call up and people are saying there’s people ahead of him.

“Even if you go into the National League, he’s scored that many goals, and he’s scored them consistently.

“If I was the manager of Wales, I would definitely have him in the squad one hundred per cent.”

Wrexham’s fortunes have taken a spectacular turn since the club’s takeover by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Welcome to Wrexham documentary on Disney Plus has closely followed the owners’ exploits, along with those of their star striker.

While there has occasionally been speculation linking Mullin with a move away from the club, Trundle believes he doesn’t need to leave the Racecourse to play Championship football.

He said: “I think that he can go and play at that level, and I'm hoping that will be with Wrexham.

“He's found himself in a situation the same as I did at Swansea, where you go to a club that just fits you and everything works around you.

“If Mulls went up the leagues with Wrexham, he'd do exactly the same and score exactly the same goals.”

Trundle was able to witness the Hollywood effect first hand after representing Wrexham at a seven-a-side tournament in North Carolina in June last year.

Discussing his experience playing at The Soccer Tournament, he said: “To go out to somewhere like America and get the welcome that we had there was unbelievable.

“I think over 20,000 fans came in and out of the stadium on the weekend and 14 to 15,000 of them put themselves down as Wrexham fans.

“As the football club grows and goes up the leagues, the fan base will too.

“The way Ryan and Rob do things, especially on the social media side, I think it’s excellent.”

Wrexham’s Hollywood owners previously set out their ambitions of taking the North Wales side all the way to the Premier League.

It’s a pledge which was called into question this week by former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan.

The talkSPORT pundit questioned whether the pair were willing to put enough money into the club to get promoted beyond League One.

However, Trundle said he believes the sky is the limit for Wrexham in terms of what they can achieve, after comparing their rise to that of his former club Swansea.

He said: “I don't think it does sound silly, because when I joined Swansea, we were still at the Vetch Field.

“If you look at Wrexham, then they’ve probably got a better backing than Swansea had.

“I said at the start of the season that they would get promoted again this year.

“I don't think they’re a League Two team, if you look at the players that they've got and how the club's run.

“I definitely think that they can bounce up again and get themselves into League One and then have another push.”

Only time will tell if Mullin and Wrexham are able to climb the leagues together, but few people are better placed than Trundle to assess their potential.
