Wrexham AFC Executive Director Humphrey Ker has claimed that Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy's age profile would not put the League One new arrivals off signing him, but admitted it's not a name that he's heard mentioned ahead of the summer.

The Welsh side have secured promotion back to the third tier of English football this season, following an excellent first year back in the EFL after a 15-year absence.

Since being taken over by American and Canadian acting duo Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the Robins have not held back on making big money moves in the transfer market, and Vardy would be another example of this as they prepare for life in League One.

This season they have signed the likes of Scottish international Steven Fletcher and Republic of Ireland international James McClean, so it is likely that if Wrexham want to compete in League One, like they did instantly in League Two, they won't fear making such a spectacular move.

Wrexham are open to signing Vardy

It has to be said that Vardy is certainly in the very senior part of his career at 37, but apparently that doesn't fear Wrexham, who could be a potential suitor for Vardy this summer if he doesn't extend his stay at the King Power Stadium.

Speaking to SportBible about the potential of making some sort of move for Vardy, Ker said, "There's nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn't be a great Wrexham player.

"It's not a name I've had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn't put us off."

It certainly would be a move that has today been made more feasible with the release of Wrexham's retained list, with as many as seven players moving on to make extra room in the squad and budget.

Vardy's impressive season means extension to Foxes stay

It has been a fantastic season for Leicester, as they have matched expectations and gained promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. There could have been some fears upon relegation to the Championship that they could become stagnant like many other ex-Premier League sides, but that has been far from the case.

Despite some late-season slip ups, a 3-0 thumping of Preston North End at Deepdale on Monday saw Vardy and his teammates confirm their title win to go with promotion to the top-flight.

Vardy himself scored twice in the match, taking his tally to 18 in the league for the Foxes this year, and showed that, despite his growing age, he has still got exactly what it takes to compete at the top end of the game.

Following their title win, Foxes boss Enzo Maresca hinted at a potential contract offering to Leicester's number nine to extend his stay, with his current terms to expire at the end of next month.

Speaking to Leicestershire Live, the Italian said, "He’s going to score goals until he’s 45 because it’s in his blood to score goals. We are very lucky that he’s our player. He’s scored many goals.

"Not yet (we didn’t discuss the contract) because the target was to finish in the right way. We have a game on Saturday and then we’ll sit, but my feeling is that he’s going to stay."

In addition to this, Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett revealed that Vardy is expected to sign a new deal with the Foxes in the coming days, meaning he will more than likely play Premier League football under the Italian boss next season.

Vardy links show Wrexham ambition - but transfer is unlikely to happen now

Any potential move to Wrexham for Vardy would definitely be remarkable, but it is likely one step too far for Wrexham at this point, as the quotes from Maresca and the revelation from Sky point to Vardy staying with the Foxes on their return to the Premier League.

Vardy has molded himself into a legend at Leicester, having played a huge role in their 2015/16 Premier League title win as well as their promotion this year, so it is going to take a monumental falling out between himself and the club for him to depart and not play Premier League football in 2024/25.

However, what this link and potential transfer rumour has shown is that Wrexham will not be afraid of approaching big-name players in the twilight of their careers to help out their cause, and this move itself could be one to watch in the coming year or two.

The signing of more senior players is certainly something Wrexham fans should be aware of going into the transfer window, and supporters should expect these astonishing links to keep on popping up throughout the next few months.
