Initial talks over a move for the Benfica midfielder came to a halt after the Portuguese club demanded his £105 million release clause be paid in full.

However, after negotiations in the last few days, it appears that an agreement is close to being reached to see Fernandez sign for Chelsea on Deadline Day.

The signature of Fernandez could open up a departure for one of the Blues’ current midfield options, with Jorginho and Gallagher subject of late January interest.

after they saw a bid in excess of £70 million rejected for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

It appears that they are ready to turn their attention to the Italian after Thomas Partey sustained an injury against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

While Everton had submitted a £40 million plus £5 million in add-ons bid for Gallagher after an impressive run of form for Graham Potter’s side of late.

It has now been revealed that Chelsea prefer to sell Jorginho to their London rivals due to Gallagher’s stance on an Everton transfer.

As reported by Florian Plettenberg, Chelsea want to sell Jorginho ahead of Gallagher because the former is not interested in a move to Everton.

Therefore, the German journalist believes that Jorginho is close to making a permanent switch to the Emirates.

There is further interest in Gallagher from the likes of Newcastle United and Crystal Palace but it remains to be seen as to whether any bids will come in for the midfielder on Deadline Day.

It looks like Jorginho is the most likely to leave Chelsea before the transfer deadline on Tuesday as Arsenal hope to conclude a deal for the Italian.
