Ipswich Town will be aiming to bounce back from their recent defeat to Lincoln City when they make their return to league action on Friday.

Set to host Derby County at Portman Road, the Blues will move to within a point of leaders Plymouth Argyle if they secure victory in front of their supporters.

One of the individuals who will be looking to redeem himself in this fixture is Kyle Edwards who was sent-off during last night’s EFL Trophy clash with Cambridge United.

This suspension only applies to this particular competition and thus Edwards will be available for selection later this week.

Deployed as a substitute against Lincoln, it will be interesting to see whether the 24-year-old is given the nod to start against Derby.

Making reference to Edwards, FLW’s Ipswich Town fan pundit Henry has suggested that the winger’s selection in upcoming league fixtures will be impacted by the type of opposition that the club are set to face.

Speaking to FLW about the former West Bromwich Albion man, Henry said: “Should Kyle Edwards be starting on a regular basis or is he better from the bench?

“I would say this is a difficult question because in certain games he can be more effective starting and then coming off the bench like he did against Cambridge [in League One] he was fantastic and obviously we saw the impact that he had there.

“Against Morecambe he was pretty non-existent on the right-hand side in the first 40 minutes and then he moved over to the left.

“Cutting in, not really letting the defender know which way he was going to go, inside or outside, he looked like a real threat and in the second-half he hit the post with a driving run, cutting inside and clipping it across the keeper and unfortunately hitting the post.

“Then he won a penalty by driving his defender and getting the wrong side of him, taking him on.

“He was really, really effective.

“So, I think when teams sit back and have a low block and there’s no space in behind I think Kyle Edwards is suited to that type of game.

“If there’s more space and it is a sort of a counter-attacking type of fixture, I think starting him may not be as useful so coming off the bench there is maybe where he is best suited.”

Quiz: Did any of these 20 ex-Ipswich Town players ever actually score a goal for the club?

The Verdict

This is a valid point as Edwards was very effective against Cambridge and Morecambe in the third-tier who both decided to give up possession of the ball in these fixtures.

Having provided six direct goal contributions in all competitions for the Blues this season, it will be interesting to see whether the winger is able to play a major role in his side’s push for promotion over the course of the coming months.

By producing an eye-catching performance against Derby on Friday, Edwards could boost his chances of claiming a spot in Ipswich’s starting eleven for the foreseeable future.

Currently facing competition for a place in the side from the likes of Marcus Harness and Conor Chaplin, Edwards certainly cannot afford to let his performance levels slip in League One.
