What Inter need to win Serie A title against Milan

The Nerazzurri have a fair chance of winning the Serie A title against the Rossoneri on April 22, and even a draw will be enough for the Nerazzurri if the Rossoneri fail to beat the Neroverdi in the next round.

Inter‘s win over Udinese on Monday kept them at the top of the Serie A table with a 14-point lead over city rivals Milan.

The Milanese sides will meet in the Derby della Madonnina in two weeks and, as things stand, the Nerazzurri will win the title, the 20th in the club’s history, if they beat their city rivals.

Follow international soccer leagues on sportbet.one as the next round will also be crucial. If it ends with Inter still having a 14-point lead over Milan, then they’ll have a solid chance to win the Scudetto and the second star in the derby the following week.

As explained by Calciomercato.com, even a draw will be enough for Inter, but only if Milan draw or lose against Sassuolo next week and the Nerazzurri beat Cagliari. In these cases, the Nerazzurri would stretch their lead to 16 or 17 points, so one point apiece in the derby would gift Simone Inzaghi’s men the title.

Bear in mind that a 15-point lead with five games remaining won’t be enough for Inter to win the title given that, in the unlikely event that the two Milanese sides finish the season level on points, there would be a play-off round to determine the Scudetto champion.

Ultimately, what Inter need is to have at least 16 points more than Milan after the derby.

Stefano Pioli’s men will have extra motivation against their city rivals. Not only to avoid seeing them celebrate a historic title in front of them but also to end the Nerazzurri’s winning streak in the derby.

Inzaghi’s men won all five derbies in 2023, beating their city rivals in Serie A, Supercoppa and in the Champions League semi-finals.

It will surely be a special match for ex-Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu who joined the Nerazzurri in a free transfer in 2021. The Turkey international was mocked by fans and even his ex-teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic when Milan won the title the following season, but Calha seems to have forgiven the Rossoneri.

“I don’t like to talk about the past. I am on good terms with some of my ex-teammates,” he told Sky Sport Italia after scoring a goal against Udinese on Monday.

“What happened is in the past. I remained silent, and I only thought about my teammates and the Inter fans who are always with me.

“I don’t want to add fire and I want to remain quiet,” he continued.

“I wish the best to Milan. I am on good terms with Maldini and Massara, but the Milan book is closed now, and to me, it makes no difference to win the derby in the derby or later. I am happy because I’ll win the first Scudetto with Inter and because we want to get a historic second star with Inter.”
