Kicker reports that Werder Bremen are losing hope of acquiring two transfer targets. Deals to bring in RB Leipzig striker André Silva and Leeds right-back Isaac Schmidt have stalled. The Bundesliga outfit cannot seem to get either deal over the line.
In the case of Silva, the sticking point remains the Portuguese international’s salary. Kicker offers up no additional details on the status of the Schmidt loan, only mentioning that the two clubs haven’t been able to move on the transfer.
The signing of both Silva and Schmidt were considered crucial to the Hanseaten as they enter the start of competitive play on Friday night severely understaffed. Bremen must face Arminia Bielefeld – who eliminated them from the cup quarterfinals last year – in their opening round DFB Pokal fixture.
Thus far this summer, Bremen have only completed two signings: Bringing in Schmidt’s Leeds teammate Maximilian Wöber in on loan and signing attacker Samuel Mbangula. Bremen head coach Horst Steffen is quoted in the Kicker piece.
“I certainly still hope that one or two transfers will come through,” Steffen is quoted as saying. “I’ve checked my phone every now and then and thought, ‘Okay, maybe there’s a message,’ but there hasn’t been anything yet. Whether or not there will be a third [incoming transfer], I just don’t know yet.
“Keke [Topp], Justin [Njinmah], and Marco [Grüll] have already scored goals in the Bundesliga, even if they didn’t score quite as many in pre-season,” Steffen said of his limited attacking options. “We shouldn’t be talking them down.”
There’s more bad news on the Bremen front to be conveyed in the Kicker piece. Bremen centre-back Amos Pieper, who contributed a strong training camp and was expected to start against Bielefeld on Friday, has been ruled out for several weeks after undergoing hip surgery.
