Bayern Munich’s Christoph Freund has offered an update regarding Joshua Kimmich’s contract situation. The 29-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, but talks have been ongoing although there is interest from Real Madrid.

On Kimmich’s situation, Freund told Sky Germany: “This is a fundamental decision in his career. He knows exactly what he has at Bayern – the club, the team and the coach. He feels extremely comfortable here. I’m positive that he will ultimately decide to stay with us.”

Although talks have been ongoing to extend Kimmich’s contract beyond 2025 for some time, both parties are yet to reach an agreement. On when that may be, Freund added: “We don’t have a specific time frame, but we don’t want to drag it out indefinitely.”

With Manuel Neuer (38) and Thomas Müller (35) also on expiring contract, Bayern’s Max Eberl believes that Kimmich has the ability to become the new face of the club. The 29-year-old has been at the club for over a decade and has made 419 appearances across all competitions – in the absence on Neuer, Kimmich is also seen as the club’s captain.

But as reported earlier in the week, Real Madrid are also in talks with Kimmich. In the event that the player does leave Germany this summer, then Real is his ‘ideal option’.
