There’s just a week left of the January transfer window and clubs are scrambling to secure new signings before the deadline.

Who could be the busiest clubs as the deadline approaches? We’ve looked at five Premier League clubs who desperately need new faces before the window slams shut.

Arsenal – Forward

Arsenal’s failure to sign a forward in the summer has been used as a stick to beat them with after each unconvincing result this season. The Gunners have remained a formidable set-piece threat and sound defensively, but the lack of an out-and-out goalscorer has been apparent.

Mikel Arteta has persisted with Kai Havertz as his central forward, though injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have reduced the remaining goal threat of his side.

Six teams, including Brentford and Fulham, have scored more open-play goals than the Gunners, a statistic that hints at a lack of creativity and ruthless touch. With a six-point gap to leaders Liverpool, Arsenal have little room for error in the run-in.

While a recognised number nine might wait until the summer, Arsenal have been linked with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian has 10 league goals this season and the second-highest xG overperformance in the Premier League behind Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Versatile and impressive in a struggling side, he could give the Gunners a lift.

Aston Villa – Centre-back

Unai Emery has confirmed Aston Villa will look to sign a centre-back before Monday’s deadline. After the captures of Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia, Villa want to bring in a defender to boost their depleted options. The sale of Diego Carlos and injuries to Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings have left Emery’s side short in the centre.

Juan Foyth, a player Emery knows well from his time at Villarreal, has been linked, while personal terms have been agreed with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi.

Everton – Forward

David Moyes has said Everton are working hard behind the scenes to bring in signings this month. After recently returning to the club, Moyes is targeting a left-back, midfielder and forward in the coming days.

Goals have been an issue for Everton, who have scored just 19 times this season. Only bottom-of-the-table Southampton have scored fewer goals. With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto struggling for form and Armando Broja’s loan move set to be cut short due to injury, Everton are likely to enter the market in search of goal threat.

The Merseysiders are one of several teams linked with a loan move for Ajax striker Brian Brobbey. The 22-year-old scored 22 goals last season but has struggled for form this time around.

Tottenham Hotspur – Centre-back

Ange Postecoglou’s call for reinforcements has not been answered with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky the only addition at Spurs so far this month. The club’s injury issues have contributed to a disastrous run of form that continued with a 2-1 defeat to struggling Leicester at the weekend.

Spurs have struggled with a patched-up defence, with teenage midfielder Archie Gray having deputised at centre-back in the absence of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The North Londoners are light in several areas but the heart of the defence has been vulnerable in recent weeks.

West Ham – Striker

Can West Ham finally get a striker signing right? The club’s struggle to find a reliable number nine has been well-documented with big-money signings including Sebastien Haller and Gianluca Scamacca failing to live up to expectations.

Currently without Jarrod Bowen, Niclas Fullkrug and Michail Antonio due to injury, new head coach Graham Potter is light in the final third. Lucas Paqueta has deputised as an auxiliary forward but the Hammers are working to bring in an established option.

RB Leipzig striker Andre Silva has been mooted as a target.
