Manager Antonio Conte held nothing back ahead of Napoli’s season opener and instead of proving him wrong, the squad fell at the hands of Verona despite controlling the game.

Prior to the match, the 55-year-old said he “doesn’t know when Napoli will become competitive” as he publicly criticized his team’s readiness. Verona subsequently capitalised on the opportunity.

After a goalless first half, Dailon Livramento had a right-footed shot find the far corner from inside the box after Verona sprinted on the breakaway.

Some 25 minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead when substitute Daniel Mosquera glided forward and struck into the same corner after only two minutes on the pitch. He later secured a brace in the dying seconds.

To make matters worse for Napoli, star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was forced off injured in the first half. They now sit bottom of Serie A after Matchday 1 while Verona are top of the table above Milan and Inter who both drew their season opener.
