Vasilis Barkas attracting European interest as Celtic look to cut losses

Vasilis Barkas is attracting interest from around Europe and Turkey, according to a report. The 27-year-old is one of a few fringe players expected to be moved on this month and Sky Sports are reporting that there is interest in the goalkeeper. Although, despite this, there are no bids at present with a number of clubs monitoring his progress.

Joe Hart has firmly established himself as No.1 at the club since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer and Celtic will look to cut their losses by shifting Barkas on this month. The Greek doesn’t feature on matchday with Scott Bain deputising and Conor Hazard acting as third pick.

Barkas was ousted from the team on multiple occasions last season since joining from AEK Athens in a £5m deal back in August 2020. However, under Neil Lennon it was clear that he had failed to settle and as a result struggled behind a makeshift defence, resulting in the Greek goalie being made a scapegoat for the poor results. He wasn’t a great acquisition despite an apparent pedigree coming as an International.

This season though, Barkas appeared to become the No.1 under new boss Ange Postecoglou. The mistake against Midtjylland and then a number of goalkeeping fumbles in the defeat to West Ham resulted in Bain taking the gloves for The Champions League exit in Denmark. Barkas made a shock return to the first team in the last game of 2021, a 3-1 win away to St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park. Hart, Bain and Hazard all missed the game.

It would be best for all parties if Barkas were to leave the club.
