The Women’s Champions League continues this week and there is already plenty to play for as matchday two kicks off!

Pressure is on as Lyon and PSG play away

Lyon do not lose Champions League games. They’ve played in the final of the competition in seven of the last 11 seasons. They’ve won the entire thing eight times in total and in six of the last seven seasons.

Words don’t really do justice to how much of a shock Arsenal delivered as they won 5-1 away from home against the French giants last week.

So here we are, one match in, and Lyon are three points behind not just the Gunners but Juventus as well and they visit Turin on Thursday knowing a defeat could put them in a very desperate situation indeed.

Things are worryingly similar for PSG, who lost at home to another London outfit — Chelsea – on matchday one and now travel to take on Real Madrid on Wednesday.

French football’s biggest clubs are immediately just one game from catastrophe.

Advantage in London

Those statement wins across the Channel will immediately be rendered pointless if Arsenal and Chelsea don’t capitalise at home.

Each side plays what looks like, on paper, their most straightforward group stage game this week, with Chelsea hosting Vllaznia on Wednesday and Arsenal playing FC Zürich at the Emirates Stadium 24 hours later.

With their biggest group stage rivals facing each other, this is a great early opportunity to take control of their fates.

Keep an eye on Group B

Group D looks straightforward enough after Barcelona and Bayern Munich beat Benfica and Rosengård last week.

Group B, though, offers something a little new for us to ponder.

Currently top of the league in Italy, Roma are  the least familiar of the ‘big name’ teams in this year’s group stage but they are impressing domestically and could emerge as dark horses if they keep things going in Europe as well.

Wolfsburg are very likely to be top of the group when it ends but Roma have the chance to win a second game in a row before they take on the German powerhouses, removing any pressure from that fixture and providing a real platform to have a crack at an upset.
