As the Women’s Super League season draws to a close, the anticipation and excitement continues between Chelsea and Manchester City in the title race.

After Manchester City’s shock 2-1 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday due to a late goal from Stina Blackstenius and Chelsea beating Bristol City a whopping 8-0 leaving them only 3 points behind City with Chelsea having a game in hand, it remains to be seen who will come out on top.

Chelsea approached Sunday’s game against Bristol City six points behind Manchester City but after the weekend results, Chelsea now have a goal difference one better than City’s. Chelsea face Tottenham next Wednesday at the Gaughan Group Stadium with their final fixture against Manchester United.

After crashing out of the Champions League following a 2-1 aggregate defeat against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge and losing to Arsenal in the FA Cup, Chelsea’s hopes of securing a trophy and Emma Hayes going out on high before jetting off to manage the USA Women’s team looked bleak.

Hayes’ departure at the end of the season means she will leave the club without winning a UEFA Champions League trophy in her 12-year stint at the club. However, there seems to be a new glimmer of hope as Chelsea are now back in the fight for a fifth successive Women’s Super League title and a trophy.

Manchester City were on a 14-match winning run before their dramatic defeat against Arsenal, a WSL record. Their final game takes place at Villa Park against Aston Villa, who only have two wins in their last five and are out of form.

City are the favourites to take all three points and will be determined not to lose the title without a fight. They are pursuing their first WSL title since 2016, and it really is all to play for both City and Chelsea.
