In a recent report, The Athletic offered an update on the future of Barcelona playmaker Fermin Lopez. It has been mentioned that Barca boss Hansi Flick was eager not to let the Spanish talent leave this summer.

Lopez’s Impressive Form In Spanish Football

Lopez had a productive season at Barcelona recently after he put in a string of eye-catching displays for them in the final third. The 22-year-old scored eight times and earned ten assists in 46 matches for the Catalan outfit in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.

The Spanish talent deserves a ton of credit for averaging 2.95 shots per 90 minutes in La Liga. He kept 36.6% of his attempts on target. Lopez was even careful when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 81.8% in the Spanish first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the Catalan club will run out in the summer of 2029. Hence, there is no immediate need for Flick to cash in on him in this transfer window.

Is Retaining Lopez A Good Decision By Barcelona Boss Hansi Flick?

Lopez is a technically gifted attacker who can make a few clever runs with the ball in the opponent’s half. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to play some killer passes on the offensive end of the field.

The Spain international mainly plays in the number ten position as an attacking midfielder, but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if asked to do so by his manager.

Lopez remains an important member of Barcelona boss Hansi Flick’s match-day squad. He is more than capable of challenging for regular first-team football at the Nou Camp. Therefore, it seems like a good decision by the Catalan club to keep hold of the Spaniard beyond this summer.

At 22, Lopez has got a bright future ahead of him at the Nou Camp as long as he continues to improve with each year. All in all, Barca have done well to retain his services as he could prove to be crucial in their efforts to compete across all fronts this season.
