UEFA to investigate the multi-club ownership of Manchester City and Girona | OneFootball

With strict rules around multi-club ownership and participation in European competition, UEFA are set to investigate City Football Group’s ownership of Manchester City and Girona FC, according to BeIN Sports.

After a surprisingly impressive season in La Liga, Girona have shocked many as they look to qualify for European football next season. Whilst this has been an inspirational story for the underdog, it has created a problem for City Football Group (CFG) which they are owned by. CFG also own Manchester City who are set to qualify for the Champions League next season.

UEFA’s rules around multi-club ownership and participation in European competition indicate that owners can own only one club and then only a 30% stake in another. If the owner of one club is the majority owner, the shareholding permitted in another club drops to 10%. CFG currently own 47% of Girona.

A date has been set for the 3rd of June for City Football Group to meet UEFA’s conditions on multi-club ownership. This is not the first instance of multi-club ownership being an issue in European competition after Toulouse and AC Milan faced the same issues this season. RedBird, who own both clubs, were able to come to a quick resolution and both teams were allowed to participate in UEFA competitions.
