Borussia Dortmund's U23s lost their last game at Stadion Rote Erde for the time being 1-0 to Eintracht Braunschweig. A goal in the opening half was enough to secure the visitors the away victory.

The opposition: With 27 points, the men from Lower Saxony boasted the second-best away record and would move up to first place in that category with a victory on Monday. Having won three matches in succession, they suffered a 2-0 loss against direct rivals Saarbrücken last Saturday. Prior to that defeat, coach Michael Schiele's side had been on a six-match unbeaten run.

The personnel: BVB coach Enrico Maassen made four changes to the starting XI that suffered a bitter defeat in Würzburg, with Kolbeinn Finnsson, Ted Tattermusch, Bradley Fink and Lennard Maloney replacing Marco Pasalic, Richmond Tachie, Immanuel Pherai and Christian Viet.

The match & analysis: The visitors from Lower Saxony had slightly more of the game in the opening minutes, without there being goalscoring opportunities. After a quarter-hour, BVB seized the initiative and predominantly threatened via the pacey Justin Njinmah down the left flank. In the 25th minute, the Dortmund attacker had to receive treatment following a challenge. Braunschweig took advantage of their temporary superiority in numbers and went 1-0 up through Maurice Multhaup.

The Black & Yellows remained unperturbed at falling behind and continued to show courage and attacking momentum going forward. Ole Pohlmann tested Jasmin Fejzic from long range (34) and Bradley Fink missed the chance to level by a matter of centimetres (43). The whistle blew with the score 1-0 at the break.

After the interval, the approximately 2,000 spectators at Stadion Rote Erde saw a game low on highlights. Braunschweig had more of the ball, without getting into dangerous positions in front of the Dortmund goal. BVB had the chance to restore parity around the hour mark but striker Bradley Fink missed from close range.

Enrico Maassen brought on some fresh legs towards the end as the match entered the closing stages. Antonios Papadopoulos had a shot from range saved by Fejzic (80) and then could not manage to get the ball over the line following a corner (85). Towards the end, the Black & Yellows did not have clear chances to get themselves back on level terms. BVB ultimately lost 1-0 and dropped down to 11th place in the 3. Liga table.

BVB U23s: Unbehaun, Finnsson (Kamara, 72), Dams, Maloney, Njinmah, Pfanne, Papadopoulos, Pohlmann (Tachie, 72), Taz (Broschinski, 78), Tattermusch (Bornemann, 78), Fink

Goals: 0-1 Multhaup (26)

Outlook: The U23s will resume after the international break with a trip to Viktoria Cologne on 02/04/2022 (14:00 CET).
