In a recent report, The Daily Express has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are facing a big stumbling block in pursuit of Stade Rennais midfielder Eduardo Camavinga. The promising teenager has admitted that he wants to extend his stay with the French club amid recent interest from Spurs along with Manchester United and Real Madrid (via The Daily Express).

Camavinga’s Impressive Form In French Football This Season

The Miconje-born talent has made an encouraging start to this campaign after producing a run of eye-catching displays at the centre of Julien Stéphan’s midfield. Camavinga has scored one goal and grabbed one assist in ten matches for his current employers this term across all fronts.

The 18-year-old has caught the eye by averaging 2.7 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 1.0 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Ligue 1 this season. He has also been accurate when distributing possession in the opposition half as he has completed 89.6% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

With his current contract set to run out in the summer of 2022, Stade Rennais have to figure out a way to extend his contract so that they can fend off interest from Spurs among other clubs in the future. Camavinga will also benefit from staying in France and committing his immediate future to his current club where he has done so well up until now.

What Does The French Whizkid Bring To The Table?

Camavinga is a no-nonsense midfielder who loves to make some well-timed tackles which enable him to win possession back for his side. He possesses excellent defensive awareness and tends to pass the ball relatively well from midfield.

The two-time French international has also got a terrific work-ethic and can even contribute by scoring or creating the odd goal from time to time. At 18, he has already shown plenty of promise and seems like a star in the making, so Spurs would do well to lure him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the future.

What Should Be Mourinho’s Play?

For now, Mourinho has enough depth in his midfield department as the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele are all fighting for a place in his first-team. Eric Dier can also play in that position while Harvey White is coming through their youth ranks as well.

Hence, there is no immediate need for a player like Camavinga at the North London club. However, if the French wonderkid can keep on improving in the coming seasons, then it makes sense for Spurs to engineer a move for him in the future. At the moment, they will be better off opting for a more experienced option, especially if they want to compete for the Premier League title next year.
