Southampton's relegation to the Championship was confirmed on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs' opening was measured and controlled, with their work out of possession limiting Ivan Juric's side, who struggled to venture into the hosts' half.
The early pressure was ominous, and Spurs soon opened the scoring through Brennan Johnson. The Welshman finished superbly with his left foot from Djed Spence's cross. Ange Postecoglou's side refused to let up in the aftermath, and they did score a second before the half-time interval after Lucas Bergvall had his goal ruled out following a lengthy VAR check.
Johnson was at the double for the hosts, with his clever finish from close range leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb in the second half. Southampton's best period of the contest arrived after the restart as they enjoyed the lion's share of possession, but chances came few and far between.
The contest was drifting, but there were goals at both ends to conclude the contest. A Mateus Fernandes strike in the final minute of the 90 offered the Saints a glimmer of hope before a Mathys Tel penalty made sure of the points at the last.
