Championship side West Bromwich Albion are in advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur regarding the potential appointment of Ryan Mason as their next head coach.

Tthe former England international, who is part of Ange Postecoglou’s backroom staff at Spurs, has become the leading candidate for the Championship side as they seek a successor to Tony Mowbray, who was dismissed in April.

According to various reports, negotiations are progressing positively, and there is growing confidence among all parties that Mason will agree to take on his first full-time managerial position.

Mason’s deal with Tottenham runs out at the end of June, which means a drawn-out release process is unlikely. Spurs are aware of West Brom’s approach and are not expected to stand in the way.

Should West Brom wish for Mason to begin duties immediately - which sources say is indeed the plan - the club will need to formally request his early release from Spurs, though this is not expected to cause any major complications.

There is also a chance that Mason could bring several members of Tottenham’s coaching staff with him to The Hawthorns.

Mason was forced to hang up his boots in 2018 at the age of just 26, after suffering a life-threatening skull fracture during a match against Chelsea in 2017. The incident, involving a collision with defender Gary Cahill, led to emergency surgery and ultimately his retirement on medical grounds.

He transitioned into coaching shortly after, joining Spurs’ technical staff in April 2018. He quickly became a key figure in the club’s youth development system before stepping in as interim first-team manager following Jose Mourinho’s departure in 2021.

Since then, Mason has remained embedded within the senior coaching group and once again took temporary charge in 2023 after Antonio Conte’s exit.
