Curtains have fallen on the illustrious career of Real Madrid and Germany legend Toni Kroos following his national team’s elimination from the UEFA Euro 2024.

Kroos announced in May that he would be retiring from football after the Euros and already played his last game for Real Madrid, winning the UEFA Champions League by defeating Borussia Dortmund.

The midfield maestro hoped for a similar ending on the international stage with Germany as well, but it was not to be.

Having come back from retirement for the Euros on his home soil, Kroos excelled in the first four matches for Germany, helping them reach the quarter-final stages.

However, tonight at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, the Real Madrid legend failed to impose himself against Spain as Germany suffered a 2-1 defeat (after extra time) and bowed out of the competition.

As such, it turned out to be the final game that Kroos would play for the German national team.

The tackle he committed on Pedri injuring him in the first period will likely be the most-remembered contribution of Kroos’ last game.

One of the greatest midfielders of the modern era, the 34-year-old brings the curtains down on what has been a special career.

A World Cup winner with Germany, Kroos was unable to add the European Championships to his trophy cabinet.
