Newerton Palmares, who transferred from São Paulo to Shakhtar Donetsk in July 2023, registered his first goal in Ukrainian football this weekend, according to Arquibancada Tricolor. The 20-year-old forward struck the opening goal in Shakhtar’s 3-3 draw with Karpaty Lviv on Sunday, underlining his gradual adaptation to European competition.
Newerton sealed his move to Shakhtar for €3.6 million—approximately R$19.4 million at the time—after coming through São Paulo’s youth ranks. Notably, the attacker made the transfer without having featured for the Tricolor’s senior side, a decision that generated both intrigue and expectation regarding his next steps abroad.
His debut goal arrives as Shakhtar seek to maintain their position at the upper reaches of the Ukrainian Premier League. For Newerton, finding the net could signal the start of a sustained run in the first team as he works to establish himself away from Brazil.
São Paulo, meanwhile, continue to see several of their academy products taking up opportunities in international leagues, reflecting the club’s reputation as a consistent exporter of young talent. Newerton’s presence in Ukraine adds to a growing list of Tricolor graduates making an impression on foreign soil. For both player and club, strong performances in European leagues can raise profiles and open doors for future transfers.
The transfer itself was concluded last July, with Shakhtar betting on Newerton’s potential rather than his experience at senior level. Now 12 months on from the move, the forward’s first major moment in Ukrainian football has arrived in the form of a crucial equaliser, a positive sign for both his personal development and Shakhtar’s attacking prospects.
