It is a wrap for 2021/22 on the Serie A season and we’ve opted for our best team of the campaign, in a 4-3-3 formation.

Who makes it in?

Gianluigi who? Of the 31 goals Milan conceded, a third of them came when Maignan was sidelined with a wrist injury and his 79% save percentage is more than any other goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues, while his Goals Saved Above Average metric stood at an incredible 7.68, per StatsBomb. An outstanding acquisition.

Runner-up: Davide Ospina (Napoli)

RB: Nahuel Molina (Udinese)

Last season proved to be a breakout one for the attack-minded Argentina international as he took the division by storm with his performances from right-back, ending the season with seven goals and two assists. He’s already being discussed as a potential €30 million sale this summer – not bad for someone signed on a free.

Runner-up: Juan Cuadrado (Juventus)

CB: Gleison Bremer (Torino)

After another colossal campaign at the heart of the Torino defence, there is now surely no way the Granata can hold on to one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders. The Brazilian led the league’s stats columns for interceptions, recoveries and most aerial duels won.

Runner-up: Alessandro Bastoni (Inter)

CB: Fikayo Tomori (Milan)

The Englishman has arguably been the key signing in the new era at Milan which shaped them from contenders to champions. The Rossoneri are a different side with Tomori at the heart of defence – conceding an average of just 0.66 goals per game when he played last season.

Runner-up: Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus)

LB: Theo Hernández (Milan)

It seems unlikely that anyone will dislodge Theo from this berth for as long as he is in Serie A. His effectively title-clinching coast-to-coast goal against Atalanta on the penultimate weekend was the stuff that dreams are made of and will long be remembered. He’s also the only defender in Europe’s top five leagues to have both scored and assisted five or more goals in each of the past two seasons.

Runner-up: Aaron Hickey (Bologna)

CM: Marcelo Brozović (Inter)

Another season, another exceptional, all-action and above all, consistent, campaign from the Croatian at the base of Inter’s midfield. His 93% passing accuracy for the season was also more than any other midfielder in the league who played in over 25 games. How much longer can he remain unheralded?

Runner-up: Fabián Ruiz (Napoli)

CM: Lorenzo Pellegrini (Roma)

Article image:🇮🇹 The OneFootball Serie A Team of the Season ...

In his first full season as Roma captain, the latest local hero to step into that role, Pellegrini has been phenomenal when fully fit. He is now the face and leader of the Lupi revolution under José Mourinho and could have had at least three different strikes throughout the season qualify for goal of the season contention (that free-kick against Lazio topping the bill).

Runner-up: Nicolò Barella (Inter)

AM: Sergej Milinković-Savić (Lazio)

Article image:🇮🇹 The OneFootball Serie A Team of the Season ...

After seven years at the Stadio Olimpico, SMS is now part of the furniture, so much so that it seems his quality largely goes unnoticed. But he remains one of the most creative and clinical playmakers anywhere in the world. He finished the season in double figures for both goals and assists with 11 for each.

Runner-up: Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter)

RW: Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo)

Article image:🇮🇹 The OneFootball Serie A Team of the Season ...

In a Sassuolo side adjusting to life after Roberto De Zerbi, Berardi’s production rate took no time to adjust. Arguably the most important individual to any side in the division, he provided more assists than any other player with 14. Oh, and he contributed 15 goals on top of that too.

Runner-up: Lautaro Martínez (Inter)

ST: Ciro Immobile (Lazio)

Article image:🇮🇹 The OneFootball Serie A Team of the Season ...

For the fourth time in his career, Immobile’s 27 goals fired him to the top of the scoring charts again. Only Gunnar Nordahl (five) has won more capocannoniere awards. The Lazio legend is also only the third man to score 25+ goals in three different seasons. His production rate remains unstoppable.

Runner-up: Dušan Vlahović (Juventus)

LW: Rafael Leão (Milan)

The breakout season everyone was waiting for from Leão came at the perfect time – firing Milan to the title. He was not only the Rossoneri’s top scorer with 11 goals but led the team’s charts for assists, shots, shots on target and touches in the opposition box. And no player in Italy comes close to him when he gets going with the ball at his feet. His 98 completed dribbles are a league high – 33 more than any other player!

Runner-up: Tammy Abraham (Roma)
