The big problem with Newcastle United success | OneFootball

This weekend marked 14 weeks since Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup.

Sunday also meant exactly four weeks since Champions League qualification was achieved by Eddie Howe and his players.

It was some season.

Across the years that preceded Sunday 16 March 2025, I would now be a very rich man if I had a penny for every time a Newcastle United fan said that if only we could win a trophy, then they could die happy.

The reality though is something different.

We all do now have the satisfaction of having finally seen our club win silverware.

However, there is a big problem with this Newcastle United success.

Far far greater than the feeling of satisfaction brought about by winning a trophy (especially in the same season as qualifying once again for the Champions League), is the fact that it then makes you even more desperate to experience it again.

Put it this way, remember back to the first time you ever got laid.

Wow, that was great, I can die a happy man/woman?

Or alternatively…

Wow, can I see you tomorrow???

I think we are all feeling the same with losing our trophy virginity (I include in that those who had almost forgotten how to do it (celebrate winning a trophy…) after having to wait 56 years to have a repeat performance!).

This is why I think there is such a heightened desire to see the team and squad properly strengthened this summer.

Rather than lying back relaxed after finally managing it, Newcastle United fans are so desperate to feel that sensation again…and again…and again.

I have no doubt that it is the same for Eddie Howe and his players, even the ones who have won titles, cups elsewhere.

They saw the reaction it stimulated in the fans and now they will be as desperate as us for a repeat performance.

I also used to regularly read and hear pundits saying that for a club on the rise, such as Newcastle United, the most difficult is managing to do it the first time, that once the first trophy is in the cabinet then it makes it a lot easier to follow that up with more success.
