Newcastle United are in talks with Burnley over a deal to sign goalkeeper James Trafford.
Eddie Howe has made Trafford his top target as the Magpies look to sign a long-term number one. The England u-21 goalkeeper was a crucial part of Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League last season.
Scott Parker’s side conceded just 16 goals in 46 games, a record-low for a Football League season. Trafford’s achievements included a run of 12 consecutive clean sheets, setting a new Championship record.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations are underway between the teams and are expected to ‘accelerate next week’. July 1st begins a new financial period for the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules with Newcastle set to step up their summer business.
The deal for Trafford is expected to be in the region of £30m. Trafford came through the academy system at Manchester City before joining Burnley for an initial fee of £15m in 2023.
He was included in the senior England squad in June but is yet to debut. At u-21 level, Trafford has won 19 caps and formed part of the squad that won the European Championship under Lee Carsley in 2023.
Meanwhile, Burnley are closing in on a potential replacement for Trafford after agreeing a deal to sign Max Weiß from Karlsruhe.
Sky Germany have revealed that the Clarets are set to sign the 21-year-old goalkeeper for a fee in the region of €5m with confidence that Weiß can become the club’s long-term number one.
