Inter’s owners Suning are ‘urging’ players to accept their request of giving up two months’ wages, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Corriere dello Sport’s print edition said the Nerazzurri’s majority shareholders had announced they would pursue a policy of austerity, as they look to stabilise the club’s finances.

Inter president Steven Zhang met players at Appiano Gentile yesterday and asked everyone to make a financial sacrifice by waving part of their annual salary.

Nobody responded after he finished his speech, but Inter’s players had already decided before the meeting that they would reject the proposal.

According to the Rome-based paper, Samir Handanovic and his teammates had a heated discussion among themselves on Friday morning, after which they decided not to agree to the pay cuts.

The discussion with Zhang yesterday was not decisive, the report added, because Suning could well put pressure on Inter’s players to accept the agreement despite their reluctance.
