After giving glimpses of what he is capable of last season, Sunderland’s Denver Hume is now eager to take his game to the next level.

Hume has been with the club for a decade after joining the Black Cats at the age of 10.

After a debut in the final game of the 2017/18 campaign, he went on to make 11 appearances last year.

Although Bryan Oviedo and Reece James are ahead of him in the pecking order, Hume is keen to make further improvements as his side give promotion a second go.

“The coaches have put a lot of time and effort into me, showing their faith in me,” he said, quoted by the Sunderland Echo.

“Now I need to repay that when I get the chance to play by putting in good performances.

“This season, I played a few games but was in and out of the team. Next season, I want to play as much as possible and make that spot my own.”

Hume, who hails from nearby Northumberland, also believes his long association with the club stands him in good stead.

“When you’ve been at a club for a long time you want to repay the faith they show in you,” the left-back continued.

“You understand the club a lot more when you’ve been here for that length of time.

“You appreciate how much it means to everyone and you want to give that back.”
