West Ham boss Graham Potter says Crysencio Summerville is not yet ready to return to the side.

The attacker missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury and will miss out when the Hammers take on Sunderland in their opening game.

Youngster George Earthy will also not play, meanwhile, having picked up an ankle injury in pre-season.

“We’ve still got Crysencio Summerville in the last stages of his rehab so he won’t be available but he’s getting really close – which is good for us,” Potter said.

“George Earthy is out with an injury that he sustained early in pre-season.

“Apart from that we’re close to full availability.”

West Ham have so far moved to bring in defender Jean-Clair Todibo on a permanent deal following his loan spell last year, left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf, goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, full-back Kyle Walker-Peters and striker Callum Wilson in the transfer window this summer.

And Potter says he is happy with the business that has been done.

“We’re really happy with what we’ve done so far,” he said. “In terms of the group, I think we’re in a good place. We’re happy with the numbers we’ve got, a nice mix or young and old players, good characters. The trick now is to keep on improving.

“It’s not just about signing anyone, we’ve got to sign the right people, the right players to help the team improve. In the meantime, my job is to focus on the ones we have and I’ve been delighted with how they’ve approached pre-season and worked together, how connected they are.

“Questions are always about individual players or signings but for me it is about the team. How the team functions, in attack, in defence, what the right balance is to bring the best out of everybody in the group. That’s what we’ve been trying to do.”

Potter is also not setting any limits on what his side can achieve this season despite a disappointing last campaign.

“The ceiling can be as high as anything, in terms of the potential of the club,” he added.
