Rangers manager Steven Gerrard believes his side need increased quality and options if they are to overturn their Champions League third qualifying round deficit against Malmö.

The Scottish champions conceded twice in three minutes at the start of the second half at Eleda Stadium, but a Steven Davis strike in the fifth minute of stoppage time could prove crucial over the course of the tie.

Gerrard is hopeful that he can include more first-choice players at Dundee United on Saturday as the Gers gear up for the return European fixture at Ibrox next Tuesday.

“I need to get some bodies back to help us. We were very young in terms of the bench, didn’t have many options to help us. It’s difficult to throw young lads into that situation,” Gerrard told Rangers TV afterwards.

“I wanted to protect them. Fashion (Sakala) came on and made a difference, we went two up front and pinned their centre halves back and it made a big difference for us.

“We’ll be stronger in terms of the squad and we’ll need to be. I said to the boys in there, my honest opinion is that there are six or seven who need to raise their level and raise it sharply.”

The Glasgow side have not qualified for the Champions League group stages since 2010.
