Voetbal International reports that Steven Berghuis will stay at Ajax this summer. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder has informed head coach Maurice Steijn about his decision to stay amid rumours of a possible move away from Amsterdam.
Steven Berghuis recently expressed his dissatisfaction with the current selection at Ajax. After the departures of Dusan Tadic, Jurriën Timber and Calvin Bassey, among others, the 45-time Netherlands international feared that the Ajax squad was left lacking quality. Quickly, rumours of a possible transfer were brewing around Berghuis.
Maurice Steijn has put the rumours to bed by telling VI ‘Berghuis wants to stay with Ajax. At least, let me put it this way: I spoke with Berghuis yesterday. He is very proud that he wears the Ajax shirt. He really wants to stay at Ajax.’
Touching on the future of Davy Klaassen, Steijn said ‘I haven’t had that conversation with Davy yet. But I don’t have any signs that he wants to leave. As long as they don’t indicate that they want to leave, I assume they will stay. Steven [Berghuis] explicitly said to me yesterday that he wants to stay.’
Steven Berghuis and Davy Klaassen aren’t the only Ajax midfielders that have been linked with moves away from the Dutch capital this summer. Edson Álvarez appears to be nearing a move to West Ham, and Mohammed Kudus has been linked with a move to Brighton this week. Speaking about those situations, Maurice Steijn said ‘Agreements were made with these two guys last year because they didn’t have their transfer at the time. Ajax adheres to that. I’m sorry, I would have loved to keep them. But they’re not gone yet, are they? That is not yet the case. But you want to keep up with those two players.’
