Feyenoord presented Sem Steijn at De Kuip on Wednesday, and the attacking midfielder was quick to make his intentions for this season clear.
Steijn (23) was the Eredivisie top scorer last season with 24 goals for FC Twente. In his two seasons in Enschede before that, he scored six and 17 goals. Hoping to keep his upward trajectory going with his 10 million euro transfer to Feyenoord, Steijn spoke of how it feels to be in Rotterdam-Zuid.
“I feel very good here. I had already thought about going to Feyenoord. I am glad I am here.”
Steijn claimed not to be too out of place at the 1908 training complex. When asked whether his shooting had already made an impression on Justin Bijlow and Timon Wellenreuther, he replied: “Yes, then I see them looking at each other. Like, he can do that.”
The former Twente man spoke highly of fellow new boy Luciano Valente. Unfazed by the arrival of another attacking midfielder, he said, “Valente and I can play together, I think. He is more of a passing player. If he passes the balls, I can score.”
So, in what is a rather silly question at this point, will Sem Steijn be nervous for his traditional Feyenoord unveiling as he and the other new acquisitions are flown by helicopter into De Kuip? Well, no.
“I’m looking forward to the first matches at De Kuip. The first match against NAC too, yes, I’m looking forward to that. Am I afraid of heights? No, I’m actually looking forward to the helicopter ride, I’m curious to see what De Kuip will look like from above.”
