While the transfer activity may have died down, there was plenty of action on the field to keep us satisfied on Thursday night.

And there was some interesting news out of the NWSL as well…

Teen sensation Serge Ngoma seals NYRB comeback win

Serge Ngoma made a name for himself after coming off the bench to score his first senior goal at the tender age of just 16 years and 356 days.

What made it all the more special is that it ensured the New York Red Bulls completed a 2-1 turnaround against Atlanta United to move top of the Eastern Conference standings.

A cool head on such young shoulders.

Pereira wastes no time making mark for Austin

It was certainly a night for super-subs, as Austin had Daniel Pereira to thank for their 1-0 victory on the road at Charlotte FC.

Introduced on the hour mark, it took the 21-year-old midfielder just two minutes to fizz a shot from distance off the underside of the crossbar and over the line to move the Texas side up to second in the West.

Talk about an instant impact!

More games slated for Leagues Cup Showcase

Three more fixtures have been added to the Leagues Cup Showcase this coming September.

Cincinnati will host Chivas on 21 September, while Nashville take on América. The following day Real Salt Lake are scheduled to entertain defending Mexican champions Atlas.

The showcase is being organised to promote interest ahead of the inaugural Leagues Cup in 2023 which will involve all MLS and Liga MX sides.

These new fixtures come back on the back of the already announced double-header at SoFi Stadium on 3 August involving LA Galaxy v Chivas and LAFC v América.

Throwback rack 👕

All that talk of Mexican sides in LA reminds us of the time El Tri legend Jorge Campos was the Galaxy’s netminder during the inaugural MLS season in 1996.

While baggy shirts were all the rage back then, we can’t help but feel you could have fit two of him into that monstrosity.

NWSL confirms expansion plans for 2024

There was a major development from the NWSL, with ESPN reporting that two new expansion teams are on the way for the 2024 season.

It is expected that Utah will be one of the markets to get a team, welcome news no doubt to those in the Beehive State still lamenting the controversial folding of the Utah Royals in 2020.

Coming up…

Speaking of the NWSL, there are three games down for decision on Friday night…

  • Houston Dash v Kansas City
  • OL Reign v North Carolina Courage
  • Angel City v Portland Thorns
