Attending a football match is a highlight for many supporters. It’s a chance to experience the passion, sound and excitement of live sport.
But to make the day as good as possible for everyone involved, there are certain rules and expectations to live up to. Stadium etiquette is about safety, but also about showing respect to other fans.
General rules that everyone should respect
All major football stadiums in the UK have clear codes of conduct to ensure that all fans can enjoy the game in a safe and respectful environment. Different stadiums have their own detailed policies, but some rules are widely applied.
Smoking is generally prohibited everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. This includes electronic cigarettes and the use of electronic cigarettes or vape devices.
Other common restrictions include bag size limits, restrictions on bringing food or drink, and bans on flares, pyrotechnics or other potentially disruptive items. Security staff often check bags and use metal detectors at entrances.
In addition, abusive language, drunkenness and aggressive behaviour are strictly prohibited and may result in expulsion from the stadium or a ban from future matches.
Rules at the Etihad stadium
As one of the largest football stadiums in the UK, the Etihad Stadium operates a detailed set of rules to ensure safety, fairness and a welcoming atmosphere. Everyone is expected to follow the instructions of stewards at all times, and anyone displaying disruptive or threatening behaviour risks being ejected from the stadium.
Entry can be denied not only for possession of prohibited items – such as flares, bottles or offensive banners – but also for behaviour deemed offensive, discriminatory or provocative. Tragedy songs and unauthorised access to the pitch or restricted areas are offences that can lead to suspension from both the stadium and other Premier League venues.
The stadium also has licensed standing sections, where strict rules apply: all fans must stay within their allocated space, refrain from standing on steps or railings and avoid blocking access areas. Anti-social behaviour in these zones can lead to penalties and even the club losing its licence to operate them.
By following the rules, visitors will help preserve an environment that allows all supporters to enjoy match days in a safe and respectful manner.
Consequences of rule-breaking
Despite the clear policies in place, there have been instances where supporters at the Etihad Stadium have flouted safety regulations, leading to serious consequences.
One notable example occurred in May 2022, when a Manchester City supporter threw a smoke flare from the stands onto the pitch during a crucial match against Aston Villa. The individual was caught on CCTV and received a three-year suspension along with a significant fine. In another incident during the same season, another supporter also received a three-year suspension after lighting a flare and firing it from the South Stand.
Beyond the legal consequences, these actions negatively impact the matchday experience for others. Flares and smoking devices can cause panic, discomfort and obstruct visibility, not to mention how much they disrupt the match itself. Inappropriate behaviour by a few individuals can reduce the enjoyment of thousands of people, which is unacceptable.
Tips for an enjoyable matchday experience
For supporters planning a visit to the Etihad or any other major football stadium, a little preparation can go a long way. Arriving early will not only help avoid long queues at security checks, but will also give you time to familiarise yourself with the layout of the stadium, including food stalls, toilets and seating.
When it comes to smoking or vaping, it is important to respect the stadium rules and plan accordingly. Keep in mind that many venues do not allow re-entry once you leave the area.
Other useful tips include dressing for the weather, using public transport whenever possible and being aware of your surroundings, especially in the seating areas. Celebrating a goal is part of the fun, but standing up for extended periods of time, shouting excessively or blocking others’ views is disruptive to other fans.
