Two Bundesliga clubs had new departures to confirm on Tuesday. Hamburg’s FC St. Pauli confirmed the sale of Brazilian striker Maurides, who will be heading back to his old Polish club Radomiak Radom.
Former Germany U21 centre-back Paul Jaeckel has also been sold by Union Berlin to 2. Bundesliga outfit Preußen Münster. Transfer fees were not divulged in the case of either player, though mid six-figure-range sums can be assumed.
Maurides’ departure was entirely expected as the Kiezkicker had no use for the 31-year-old they acquired from Radomiak two-and-a-half years ago. Maurides actually never ended up making a start for St. Pauli in either the German first or second divisions. A knee injury prevented him from establishing himself in the 2. Bundesliga and he was not considered an option after promotion to the top flight.
Jaeckel’s sale was also not entirely unexpected, though the current centre-back situation at Union did leave some wondering whether the FCU coaching staff might be willing to give Jaeckel a fresh look. Apparently, neither Jaeckel nor the club were in much of a mood to give it another shot. Union management confirmed that Jaeckel had handed in a transfer request.
“Paul is a professional who has always put the success of the team above his own ambitions,” FCU managing director Horst Heldt noted in a club statement. “We can well understand his desire for more playing time.”
Jaeckel himself reflected on the privilege of representing Union in the 2023/24 Champions League in his own FCU statement. Even as his league minutes began to dry up that year, Jaeckel made two UCL starts during the Köpenick club’s historic campaign.
“I am very happy to be here now,” Jaeckel added in his introductory Preußen Münster statement, “From the very first day we made contact, those responsible have made a great effort to sign me. I want to lead the way, bring my experience to the team, and inspire the guys.“
