It has been an excellent season for Southampton in the Championship so far.

The Saints made a turbulent start to life in the second tier after their relegation from the Premier League last season, but after suffering four consecutive defeats in September, they have improved significantly in recent months.

Southampton extended their unbeaten run to 19 games with a 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at St Mary's on Saturday, equalling the club record, with goals from Che Adams, Adam Armstrong, Ryan Fraser and Sekou Mara securing an emphatic victory.

Russell Martin's side currently sit third in the table, three points behind second-placed Ipswich Town and 10 points behind leaders Leicester City, and they are back in action when they make the trip to face Swansea City at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday.

The Saints made their first signing of the January transfer window this week, with midfielder Joe Rothwell arriving on loan from Bournemouth, and while Martin will be keen to strengthen his squad further, there could also be a number of departures over the coming weeks.

One player who could be set to move on is striker Adams, with the 27-year-old once again attracting Premier League interest.

Everton, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers were linked with Adams in the summer, but the Scotland international remained at St Mary's.

According to talkSPORT, the trio are still keen on Adams this month, and Southampton are said to have placed a £6 million valuation on the striker.

Southampton may be reluctant to lose Adams given his strong recent form, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, they should consider any offers that meet their asking price.

Southampton should cash in on Che Adams this month

Adams enjoyed an excellent start to the season, scoring three goals in his first four appearances in all competitions before failing to get on the scoresheet for almost four months.

However, after netting against Watford in early December, Adams has rediscovered his form, scoring five goals in his last nine games, and playing a crucial role in the Saints' impressive unbeaten run.

Martin said last month that he believes that "there will be a lot of people interested" in Adams in January, but he revealed that he was keen to keep hold of the striker.

"I hope we keep him because he is a good human being and he is a really good player," Martin told the Daily Echo.

"He’s played a bit more freely in the last few games which is nice. He feels things a lot and he cares.

"He wants to be seen in a certain way. He gives everything in training and he is a brilliant character."

The Daily Echo claimed in the summer that Southampton offered Adams a new three-year contract, which includes vice-captaincy, but he is yet to agree to an extension.

With little sign that Adams is set to commit his future to the club, the January window is the Saints' last chance to cash in on him.

It would be a blow to lose Adams' goals, particularly with Ross Stewart ruled out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury, but with the likes of Adam Armstrong, Carlos Alcaraz and Sekou Mara in the squad, Martin has plenty of dangerous attacking options at his disposal.

Armstrong has enjoyed an outstanding season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, while Mara has netted three times in his last five games, and Alcaraz has proven to be a capable performer when deployed in the number nine role this campaign.

, and with Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland said to be on the Saints' radar, the money from Adams' sale could allow the club to make a move for the 28-year-old.

With just six months remaining on his contract, Southampton may not be able to secure as large a fee as they would have liked for Adams, but receiving £6 million for the striker is significantly better than losing him for free in the summer.
