The Saints are eyeing a move for a former Pompey man

This has a busy summer transfer window for Portsmouth, in what is an exciting period for the club.

Last season, the club ended their long wait for promotion back to the Championship, after claiming the League One title.

With John Mousinho's side now preparing for life back in the second-tier of English football, they need to put together a squad that is capable of competing at this level.

So far this summer, Portsmouth have made five first-team signings, while several more have extended their contracts with the club, as they look to do just that.

However, one player who looks as though he is unlikely to return to Fratton Park this summer is Abu Kamara.

Norwich City winger shone at Fratton Park

Last summer, one of those who made the move to Portsmouth was Abu Kamara, with the winger joining on a season-long loan from Norwich City.

Having made that move, the Canaries loanee enjoyed an excellent campaign to help Pompey win promotion back to the Championship.

In total, Kamara scored ten goals and provided 11 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions for Mousinho's side.

That form was also enough to see him earn his first international caps for England's Under 20s earlier this year.

Given the size and significance of that contribution, many Portsmouth fans understandably have been keen to see the winger back at Fratton Park this summer.

So far though, no such deal has materialised. Instead, it seems there is a chance that Kamara could be set for a move elsewhere, which would be particularly painful for those of a Pompey persuasion.

Southampton want former Portsmouth star

According to recent reports from Football Insider, newly-promoted Premier League side Southampton are now preparing a bid to sign for Kamara this summer.

Given the fact they have both the finances and footballing appeal of a top-flight club, Russell Martin's side would no doubt be in a strong position to secure this deal should they want to.

The funds they have available as a club mean they ought to be able to meet an asking price set by Norwich.

Kamara himself, meanwhile, would surely relish the chance to show just what he can do with the experience of playing in the biggest league in the world.

That would, of course, prove to be a blow for Portsmouth. It would mean they miss out on a player who had the ability and popularity at the club, to have surely made him one of their preferred signings this summer.

The fact it would be a move to Southampton for Kamara that would end their chances of reuniting with him, would also be rather tough to take for those connected with Portsmouth.

Seeing a player who played such a big part for them, and developed such a connection with the club in the process, wearing the shirt and badge of their closest rivals in a division above, it not something supporters of any club would want to see.

For Portsmouth, this would be particularly frustrating, given it is not the first time it has happened in recent years.

Back in the summer of 2022, Southampton also signed Gavin Bazunu from Manchester City, on the back of an impressive loan spell for the goalkeeper with Portsmouth, during the 2021/22 campaign in League One.

To see it happen again with another popular player in the form of Kamara, is therefore something those at Fratton Park would surely be desperate to avoid.

Whether that happens, though, is to some extent out of their hands, and so those connected with Portsmouth may reluctantly be keeping a nervous eye on transfer business at Southampton, over the course of the next few weeks.
