Sint-Truiden have confirmed the departure of Mauritanian international Aboubakary Koïta. The winger, who was the sides top scorer last season, has linked up with AEK Athens for a fee in the region of €3.6m. It was always expected that both Koïta and Sint-Truiden would cash in on the players success and there has been a mutual parting of ways, something that has not been the case with other departures from the club this summer. Koïta has signed a deal with the Greek capital club until 2029.
Koïta joined the club from Waasland-Beveren in the summer of 2021. During his time with the Beveren club he had shown flashes of what he could do, with seven goals in 27 games during the 2020/2021 season. Many of these were long rang shots, something that became a hall mark of his last campaign. During his first two seasons with Sint-Truiden he only scored three goals, but when Thorsten Fink arrived and brought a more offensive style of play, Koïta thrived. In 37 league games last season he scored 15 goals, by far the best of his career so far. The 25-year-old was rewarded with a call up to the Mauritanian national team for AFCON, where he scored a sublime goal.
Sint-Truiden are expected to be active in the transfer market right up until the deadline as they look to replace the likes of Koïta and other key players who have departed this summer.
