FLW's Sheffield United fan pundit has given his verdict on the possible departure of Jack Robinson
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Jack Robinson has been linked with a move away from Sheffield United this summer with interest from Wrexham forthcoming.
According to The Sun, the Red Dragons are considering an approach for the defender before the transfer window closes.
The centre-back started on the bench for the Blades’ first game of the new season, which Ruben Selles’ side lost 4-1.
Robinson featured 34 times in the Championship last year under Chris Wilder, with the team narrowly missing out on promotion with a play-off final loss to Sunderland.
When asked about Robinson’s possible departure, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy, from Blades Ramble, claimed that defensive reinforcements are needed whether he stays or goes after Anel Ahmedhodzic’s exit.
He believes the 31-year-old is not a top end Championship defender, but suggested the lack of options at the back in Selles’ side makes a sale potentially quite damaging unless signings are made before the window shuts.
“This is a difficult one to comment on because I’m not convinced Jack Robinson is a top end Championship player first and foremost, if you’re purely basing it on football and where you want to be,” Jimmy told Football League World.
“If we want to be a top Championship side that’s fighting for automatic promotion, I’m not convinced Jack Robinson is the man to lead you there.
“I’m not sure out of the Burnley and Leeds squads last year that we were competing so closely with, I don’t think he gets near their squad, I don’t think he gets in the Sunderland side.
“So, for me, we need an upgrade on Jack Robinson anyway.
“The issue at the moment is, we haven’t got anyone in to replace him.
“So not only have we lost Anel Ahmedhodzic, who was our best defender, we’re also losing what could be deemed as a starting defender in the current circumstances.
“That’s a huge concern in that regard in terms of a recognised centre-back.
“But ultimately, if the player doesn’t want to be here, then we’ll drive him to them ourselves, because we don’t want anyone that doesn’t want to be at our football club.
“So, if he’s going, all the best to him and we need to focus on what we need to do to get that defence sorted out.”
Sheffield United will face Swansea City next in the league, with the two sides set to meet on 16 August.
The manner of the 4-1 loss to Bristol City last weekend really highlighted the deficiencies in the Sheffield United backline.
Rhys Norrington-Davies was chosen at centre-back instead of Robinson, perhaps indicating he has fallen down the pecking order under Selles.
But the Blades can’t really afford to lose any more bodies just yet as they need to bring in fresh faces before letting anyone else go.
While Robinson may not be of the standard required to compete at that level over a whole season, the loss of Ahmedhodzic means he may be needed for the time being.
