Sheffield United suffered an embarrassing 4-1 home defeat against Bristol City in Ruben Selles’ first competitive game as Blades boss.

Scott Twine opened the scoring for the visitors from an excellent free-kick into the top left corner. The Blades swiftly responded when Tyrese Campbell finished a fine piece of work by Callum O’Hare. But the Robins notched back in front as Ross McCrorie steamed down the right and found the bottom left corner.

Just moments into the second half, Anis Mehmeti crushed any hopes of a United comeback after latching onto an Emil Riis Jacobsen cross. The scoring was capped off by a heavily deflected Twine effort, leaving Michael Cooper no chance.

The visitors struck early, taking the lead after just five minutes when Yu Hirakawa earned a free-kick on the edge of the area. Scott Twine stepped up and expertly curled his effort past Michael Cooper to make it 1-0.

Sheffield United responded with purpose and were level in the 14th minute. After a spell of pressure and successive corners, Callum O’Hare won the ball high up the pitch before squaring for Tyrese Campbell with the outside of his right foot, who smashed home from inside the box.

Moments later, the Blades almost turned the game on its head when a rapid counter-attack ended with Louie Barry forcing Vítek into a sharp save low to his right. But it was City who reclaimed the advantage when Ross McCrorie drilled a low strike into Cooper’s far corner to make it 2-1.

The Blades continued to carry the greater threat before the break. Barry was denied again as his shot was heading towards the top right corner, while Vítek stood tall to thwart Sydie Peck after the youngster tried to divert Femi Seriki’s goal-bound shot into the net.

Second Half

Within a minute of the restart, Bristol City extended their lead. Riis Jacobsen found Anis Mehmeti in the area after a poor piece of distribution from Norrington-Davies which he then got sucked to the ball to try and make up for his error. But the Albanian in plenty of space volleyed clinically past Cooper for 3-1.

The game looked to be slipping away from United, and things got worse on 51 minutes when Norrington-Davies again with another error eventually saw Twine’s strike deflect off Tyler Bindon, wrong-footing Cooper and nestling in the net for 4-1.

Riis Jacobsen almost added a fifth for City after neat interplay with Mehmeti and Twine, but he fired over from close range.

United rallied late on, piling forward in search of a way back. Knight produced a stunning block to deny Tom Cannon from point-blank range, while Vítek’s reflexes were again tested as he acrobatically kept out Peck’s effort.
