Sebastian Lletget has called on his New England Revolution teammates to 'look at themselves in the mirror' after falling to a 3-2 defeat at Inter Miami on Saturday.
The reigning Supporters' Shield champions have endured an ugly start to the season, taking just four points from their opening six MLS matches and exiting the Concacaf Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
The Revs' latest defeat tasted all the more sour considering they faced a Miami side with just one point and one non-penalty goal to their name prior to Saturday.
“It's going to come down to us taking initiative, us taking the reigns a little bit between the group,” Lletget said post-match.
“Everybody's got to look themselves in the mirror and see what they could be doing better because we scored twice when we're away and you should walk away with something, I'm sorry.
"Definitely in my experience, you score two goals when you're away from home, you're walking away with a point or you're winning the game. And I think we're too spread apart.”
A wretched defensive performance and a host of mistakes allowed Inter Miami forward Leonardo Campana to cash in with a hat-trick on the day. The Revs have now allowed 12 goals in MLS this season, with FC Cincinnati (14), Miami, and CF Montreal (both 15) the only teams in the East to concede more.
“The first goal, again, just a really poor play with our marking in front of the goal," Revs head coach Bruce Arena observed. "The second goal, a couple of mistakes by players going to the ground, but give them credit. I thought their second goal, they did a heck of a job and certainly earned it. The third goal was another gift we've given away."
Lamenting his team's defense, Arena continued: "Today, it's another gift. We gave away some points at the end of the game. We have to make a play at the end of the game not to give up a loose ball in front of the goal and just get off the field with a point.
"I've told our team a number of times to think about the Salt Lake game, the Red Bull game last week, you know, where in the closing minutes of games, we just take the point and get out of there and say listen, ‘It wasn't our best day, but we take point.’ But we have failed to do that. So, you know, a combination of things, but we certainly haven't played well enough.”
