Arrigo Sacchi warns Inter that they must ‘listen’ to new coach Cristian Chivu as the club has the ‘most difficult role’ after appointing their former defender.

Chivu already made his debut as the new Inter coach during the Club World Cup earlier this summer, and ex-Milan coach Sacchi urges the Nerazzurri to listen to their new manager’s idea during the current transfer window.

“It will take him months to convey his ideas and get in sync with the players,” Sacchi wrote in his latest column for Gazzetta dello Sport.

Sacchi: Chivu has a point in his favour

“He does have the advantage of knowing the environment very well, having been there both as a player and as a youth team coach. That is certainly a point in his favour.”

Inter have targeted Ademola Lookman as their priority target in attack, but Atalanta have rejected their latest offer worth €45m, including add-ons.

It is believed that the Serie A giants will also try to sign a central defender this summer, but the priority for the club will be to listen to the coach’s ideas, according to Sacchi.

“Right now, the most difficult role isn’t Chivu’s but the club’s,” warned the ex-Italian tactician.

“The coach needs the support from the management, who must help him through difficult moments, shielding him from inevitable criticism. They must also build the team he imagines by going into the market to find the players who are still missing.

Sacchi: Inter can’t ignore Chivu

“Inter must not make the mistake of ignoring the coach’s requests, as many other clubs do. Chivu knows very well who is needed and who isn’t, and within the club’s financial means, the directors have a duty to satisfy him.”

Inter will make their 2025-26 Serie A debut at home against Torino on August 25.

“There may be some early difficulties, that’s possible, but this should not be a reason to question the coach’s work,” Sacchi concluded.

“Once the team has been entrusted to him and the goals have been set together, the only thing to do is to help him reach those targets. Remember, he is the leader of the expedition, he is the one with a direct line to the players and he is the man tasked with giving the team his style of play, so his words must always be listened to.”

Inter have already signed Petar Sucic, Luis Henrique and Ange-Yoan Bonny this summer.
