The TV pundits on duty last night picked Thiago Silva as their man of the match, and with good reason. The centre back was dominant at the back for Chelsea against Middlesbrough.
There were plenty of good performances further forward too – Ruben Loftus-Cheek had some lovely touches in the middle, and Mason Mount was a constant threat down the right.
Interestingly, the WhoScored man of the match went to none of these guys – it went to Romelu Lukaku. Their award is based on stats, and Lukaku clearly did well on that front, even beyond his goal.
He notched up 2 dribbles, 3 shots (two on target), won an aerial duel and kept an 88% pass completion rate as he held the ball up well and brought his teammates into the game.
He’s not going to be displacing Kai Havertz in the first team anytime soon, but it was great to see him looking more confident and fluid than we’ve seen for a while.
