After the sublime skill for his goal on Sunday at Tannadice, Tom Rogic’s former Futsal teammate Greg Giovenali has come out and revealed that Tommy has always had the ability to play football that way and that he knew he was destined for greatness.

Rogic has certainly enjoyed a renaissance under countryman, Ange Postecoglou and is proving to be back to his best after being misused by the former regime. Now ex-teammate Giovenali has insisted the big man always had that something special. Speaking to Scottish Sun, he said: “The one word we always used to describe Tommy was silky. He was picked for the Australia futsal team when he was 17 and you could see he had talent. Tom was never someone who was full of tricks. He wouldn’t leave defenders for dead with stepovers.”

But he had a natural ability to drift past people and really use his height and strength to protect the ball. Certain players have that X-Factor and Tom was one of them. He always had the ability to find space and just slow the game down to his pace. Whenever he got the ball, he dictated the tempo and before you knew it, he had beaten three or four players. Then, as he has shown over the years for Celtic, when he got into the right areas he could always finish. That goal on Sunday just summed him up — skill, strength, balance and then he finds the bin with a brilliant strike.

Adrian Sporle of Dundee United collides with Tom Rogic of Celtic

“That goal on Sunday just summed him up — skill, strength, balance. Tom actually wasn’t with the futsal side for very long but he definitely made his mark. He was our top scorer with six goals at the Asian Championship in 2010 at such a young age.Tommy was a special player and we all knew he was destined for big things. But he was also a great guy around the place. Really quiet and unassuming.

“Tommy was young but quickly became part of the squad and really made an impact on all of us. He was a free spirit on the pitch. He would do things that would make you smile. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s still doing the business for Celtic all these years later.”

Celtic are definitely seeing the real Tom Rogic in full-flow again. After Brendan Rodgers left Celtic the silky Aussie never looked the same player. Neil Lennon just didn’t know how to use or get the best out of Tommy. This year is patently obvious that Tom Rogic will be integral in any success we have throughout the season or any silverware we may win.
