Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has revealed his first goal in Tuesday’s 6-2 rout of Bayer Leverkusen was inspired by his love for ice hockey.
Lewandowski opened the scoring after just three minutes at the BayArena before doubling his tally six minutes later to give his side a commanding lead in the DFB-Pokal semi-final clash.
And the Pole says he borrowed a technique from a rather different sport when he deftly deflected Javi Martínez’s shot past goalkeeper Bernd Leno for his 37th goal of the season.
“I know this trick from the scorers in ice hockey,” the 29-year-old told Bild.
“I’ve done it three or four times, getting a slight deflection to score. You need good timing, a good attitude and a good position.
“It makes it much more difficult for the opponents and especially the goalkeeper, a slight touch came make the difference for a goal.
“Jonathan Tah was right behind me and if I hadn’t touched the ball, he would have cleared it. Javi said afterwards that it was good I deflected the ball slightly.”
Lewandowski will be up against a Real Madrid side in mid-week with whom he has been heavily linked with a move and speaking ahead of the Champions League semi-final clash, Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes refused to be drawn on comparisons between the former Borussia Dortmund hit-man and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I do not think you can compare these types of players,” Heynckes told reporters.
“Robert Lewandowski is a player who plays in front of the opposing goal, especially with his back to the opponent. He is always attacked and this is one of the big strength of a striker who plays in this position.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is a player who often plays on the left side and moves between the lines.
“What he does outstanding – especially lately, but also during his whole career – is that he has a good nose for scoring chances in the centre-forward position and in front of the opposing goal. He finishes these chances as well.
“But you could cite the match on Tuesday as an example: Lewandowski’s goal-scoring rate is great. He scored the first two goals on Tuesday.”
