Which Bayern Munich players are injured and for how long?

Jamal Musiala

Musiala suffered a cruel injury blow at the end of Bayern's FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the USA, breaking a leg and ankle in a nasty collision with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The quarter-final defeat in which the playmaker suffered the injury saw the 22-year-old make his first start since hurting his hamstring in a 3-1 win at Augsburg on Matchday 28 of the 2024/25 Bundesliga.

Although he was operated upon within days of suffering the injury and has begun his recovery, Bayern will have to contend with life without the attacking marvel for the opening months of the 2025/26 campaign.

"Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team," said Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl. "Furthermore, there’s also a huge human impact, and we all feel for him."

The sight of Musiala visiting Bayern's training base on 21 July on crutches to watch the FC Bayern World Squad was a reminder he will not be back in action anytime soon.

Alphonso Davies

Davies signed a contract extension at the start of February that is set to keep him in Munich to 2030, only for his 2024/25 season to be curtailed shortly afterwards. The left-back led Canada out as captain in the Concacaf Nations League third-place play-off against the USA in March but came off after only 12 minutes.

Upon his return to Germany, the club determined he had torn his cruciate ligament. Davies published a video in May outlining the psychological challenge the injury presented.

The 24-year-old returned to individual training in July ahead of Bayern's pre-season, raising hopes that he may return to action before the end of 2025.

Hiroki Ito

Days after Davies suffered his injury in March, Bayern were deprived of another left-sided defender when Ito fractured his metatarsal in their win over St. Pauli on Matchday 27.

“He had just fought his way back after a months-long rehabilitation and is now out again for a long time," said Eberl. "You can only imagine what’s going through his head.”

The Japan international had only returned from another broken metatarsal in February, having first suffered the injury in a pre-season friendly shortly after his summer move from VfB Stuttgart.

The net result from the double injury blow was that Ito made only six appearances in his first season for the Bavarian side.

The 26-year-old has spent the summer working towards a return again and has resumed running by doing laps around the club's Säbener Straße training ground at the end of July as he targets October as a potential comeback date.

Tarek Buchmann

Tarek Buchmann was able to make his first appearance in months in a friendly against Ulm at the start of July following shoulder surgery earlier this year, paving the way for the 20-year-old to return at some stage before the start of the season.

The shoulder issue was the latest setback in a frustrating time for the highly regarded centre-back, after a torn muscle first suffered in May 2023 kept him sidelined for almost two years.

Vincent Kompany will be hoping the injury list remains as short as possible as Bayern prepare to battle to retain their Bundesliga crown.

After facing DFB Cup winners VfB Stuttgart in the season's curtain-raiser, the Franz Beckenbauer Cup on Saturday 16 August, Bayern begin their title defence at home to RB Leipzig on Friday 22 August.
