Robbie Savage is in talks about taking the vacant Forest Green Rovers job, Hayters.com understands.

It comes after the departure of former boss Steve Cotterill, who left the club earlier this week following the appointment of Mark Bowen as director of football.

Savage is currently in charge of Macclesfield FC, guiding the club to the Northern Premier League title and promotion to the National League North last season.

But the former Leicester, Birmingham, Blackburn and Derby midfielder is closing in on taking over at National League side Forest Green, who missed out on promotion to League Two last season by losing in the play-off semi-finals.

The 50-year-old could face a battle to keep star man Kyle McAllister should he take over, however.

McAllister scored ten and set up ten goals last season, making the National League team of the season, and is again the subject of interest from Football League clubs, Hayters.com understands.

Rovers are reluctant to sell the winger though as they target a return to the Football League, with Savage looking set to be the man tasked with achieving that.

The former Wales international had previously said it would take a “very special” job to prise him away from Macclesfield.

“It’s my club and it’s not very often you can manage your club, the one you’ve built from the first brick with your best friend, so it would take an awful lot for me to leave,” Savage told BBC Radio Manchester in March.

“There’s League One and League Two clubs I wouldn’t go to if they offered me the job now because I can’t see the journey or the project.

“It’s not about money for me. I’m probably the only unpaid manager in the league. It’s not for money, it’s for the journey.”
